If you ever wished you could hit the brakes before you explode, this one tool can help.
Hi, I’m Dr. Tom McDonagh from Good Therapy SF. And I’m going to show you a simple way to pause before you react. So here’s the key.
Notice the physical signals in your body before the emotional reaction takes over. For example, your body might give you a clue, like a tight chest, a clenched jaw, or shallow breathing. Use that cue as a built in pause button.
So why does it work? You can’t stop the feeling from initially happening. But you can interrupt the automatic response you have to that feeling and that pause gives you a chance to choose a response that hopefully you won’t regret.
So next time your body tenses up, use that moment to breathe and not react. Remember, therapy can help you build more space between what you feel and what you do. So for more information, feel free to reach out to Good Therapy SF.
