Why Overthinking Makes Decisions Harder (And How to Move Forward)

Stuck overthinking every decision? It’s not making you smarter, it’s making it harder to move forward.

Hi, I’m Dr. Tom McDonagh, a therapist at Good Therapy SF, and I’m going to explain why overthinking makes decisions harder and how you can move forward.

First, overthinking creates endless what if scenarios making any choice feel risky.

Next, the brain looks for the perfect certainty. Really, there’s no perfect choice.
Lastly, more thinking doesn’t lead to more clarity. It leads to more doubt.

So how to move forward? Choose based on your values, not fear of mistakes. Try to take small action rather than chasing the perfect decision.

Lastly, remind yourself. Clarity comes from doing, not just thinking. So you don’t have to think your way out of uncertainty. You can act your way into clarity.
