Coping with Natural Disasters

Feeling overwhelmed by the uncertainty of natural disasters? Well, here at Good Therapy SF, we have some ways to talk to our clients about these events that might help you as well.

One tip is focusing on limiting media exposure. It’s important to stay informed, but want to make sure you don’t overload yourself with too much distressing news about these updates. Another key point is to try to focus on what you can control instead of focusing on what is out of your control. Try to create an emergency plan ahead of time, perhaps have a go bag or some sort of supplies gathered ahead of time, and think about what sort of proactive steps you would take ahead of time that would make you feel more prepared.

Another key tip to try is practicing grounding techniques. Using these simple methods in the moment, like using tactile or touch around you, focusing on deep breathing or other types of mindfulness skills can help reduce your anxiety in the moment and help you think more clearly.

Lastly, staying connected to your social network. So talking to family and friends about your feelings and thoughts about what you would do or any sort of concerns you have about natural disasters can help reduce your anxiety as well.
