Hi, I’m Dr. Tom McDonagh, a psychologist at Good Therapy SF. So more people are using AI tools to get emotional support, and while that can feel helpful, there’s a mistake I see too often and that’s people start treating AI like a replacement for real connection and growth.
So what AI can do and why it feels helpful, is that it mimics empathy by reflecting your language back to you. This makes you feel non-judgmental and it’s available anytime you want.
Another problem I see with it is Over-Reliance. So AI can’t offer real understanding. AI doesn’t know your history, your patterns, or your real deeper needs.
It often avoids discomfort. Growth often comes from being gently challenged, and AI rarely does that.
And then it also creates the illusion of the connection. That might make you feel good temporarily. Leaves you emotionally isolated in the long run.
So what real support looks like is a therapist bringing insight, accountability, and genuine human presence. Therapy often creates a space for reflection, not just reassurance.
So how can you use AI? Try to use it as a tool for journaling or organizing your thoughts, but don’t let it be your only outlet. Try to reach out for real connection from friends, support groups or therapy.
So AI can be a helpful part of your support system, but if it’s not a substitute for real human relationships. If you’re ready to go deeper, therapy can offer the connection and clarity that you’re looking for.
